- Retrospective analysis of 340 lower extremity MDCT angiography scans from 170 patients (118 male, 52 female).
- Classification of popliteal artery branching types and calculation of incidence rates.
- Comparison of TPT (tibiopopliteal trunk) diameters and lengths by gender and side; calculation of dominance rates for ATA, PTA, and peroneal artery.
Main Results:
- Type IA was the most common branching pattern (89.4%); variational patterns occurred in 10.6%, with Type III being most frequent (4.1%).
- Variational patterns were twice as prevalent in females.
- Posterior tibial artery (PTA) was the most common dominant artery in both genders; new subtypes (short, standard, long) were defined for Type IA based on TPT length.
Conclusions:
- Popliteal artery branching patterns exhibit significant variation, with a higher incidence in females.
- MDCT angiography is effective for detailed anatomical assessment of the popliteal artery.
- Classification of new subtypes within the common Type IA pattern aids in more precise anatomical description.
