Summary

Signal transducer and activator of transcription 1 (STAT1) activity is linked to cancer. High STAT1 expression can predict better survival in some solid tumors, but worse survival in others, indicating its complex prognostic role.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the prognostic significance of STAT1 expression in patients with solid cancers.
  • To determine if STAT1 expression levels correlate with overall survival (OS) and disease-specific survival (DSS).
  • To explore STAT1's prognostic value across different cancer types using meta-analysis and TCGA data.

Main Methods:

  • A systematic literature search was conducted on PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase up to October 2019.
  • Pooled hazard ratios (HRs) and confidence intervals (CIs) were extracted from 15 studies involving 2839 patients.
  • The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database was utilized to analyze STAT1 expression and its correlation with prognosis in various cancers.

  • Overexpressed STAT1 was associated with improved OS (HR=0.604) and DSS (HR=0.650) in the pooled analysis.

Conclusions:

  • STAT1 possesses significant prognostic value in patients with solid cancers.
  • The prognostic implication of STAT1 expression is tumor-type dependent.
  • High STAT1 expression can serve as a predictive marker for patient outcomes in specific cancer types.
