Summary

Background:

  • Myocardial Performance Index (MPI) assesses both systolic and diastolic cardiac functions non-invasively.
  • Erectile dysfunction (ED) is increasingly recognized as a potential early indicator of cardiovascular disease (CVD).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between erectile dysfunction (ED) and myocardial performance index (MPI).
  • To determine if MPI can serve as a predictor for cardiovascular risks in patients with ED.

Main Methods:

  • The study included 45 male patients diagnosed with ED and 48 healthy male volunteers.
  • Echocardiographic measurements of isovolumetric contraction time (IVCT), isovolumetric relaxation time (IVRT), and ejection time (ET) were performed.
  • MPI was calculated using the formula: (IVCT + IVRT) / ET.

Main Results:

  • The early diastolic mitral inflow (E)/late diastolic mitral inflow (A) ratio was significantly lower in the ED group.
  • Early diastolic mitral annular velocity (Em) was significantly higher in the ED group, while late diastolic mitral annular velocity (Am) and systolic peak velocities (Sm) showed no significant difference.
  • Myocardial performance index (MPI) was found to be significantly higher in the ED group compared to healthy controls.

Conclusions:

  • Erectile dysfunction (ED) significantly affects the myocardial performance index (MPI).
  • MPI, a readily measurable and non-invasive parameter, shows potential for predicting cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in individuals with ED.
