Three-Dimensional Force System:Problem Solving01:30

Three-Dimensional Force System:Problem Solving

1.3K
A three-dimensional force system refers to a scenario in which three forces act simultaneously in three different directions. This type of problem is commonly encountered in physics and engineering, where it is necessary to calculate the resultant force on the system, which can then be used to predict or analyze the behavior of the object or structure under consideration.
To solve a three-dimensional force system, first resolve each force into its respective scalar components. Do this using...

Cranial Bones: Lateral View01:27

Cranial Bones: Lateral View

4.2K
The lateral view of the cranium is dominated by temporal, sphenoid, and ethmoid bones.
The temporal bone forms the lower lateral side of the skull. The temporal bone is subdivided into several regions. The flattened upper portion is the squamous portion of the temporal bone. Below this area and projecting anteriorly is the zygomatic process of the temporal bone, which forms the posterior portion of the zygomatic arch. Posteriorly is the mastoid portion of the temporal bone. Projecting...

Summary

A new 3D coordinate system allows quantitative craniofacial evaluation in hemifacial microsomia (HFM) patients. Mandibular deformity correlates with specific facial bone changes, aiding HFM assessment.

Area of Science:

  • Craniofacial morphology
  • Medical imaging analysis
  • Congenital disorders

Background:

  • Hemifacial microsomia (HFM) is a congenital disorder causing facial asymmetry.
  • A standardized midline reference for evaluating HFM facial morphology is lacking.
  • This study addresses the need for objective craniofacial assessment in HFM.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a 3D coordinate system for HFM patients.
  • The system is designed to be independent of external acoustic aperture or orbital circumference deformities.
  • To quantitatively evaluate craniofacial morphology in HFM.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized 3D measurements with the skull base as a reference.
  • Computed tomography data from 15 HFM patients and 15 controls were analyzed.
  • A patient-specific coordinate system was created to compare left-right measurement differences.

Main Results:

  • Craniofacial deformity in HFM is not solely linked to mandibular deformity.
  • Severe mandibular deformity correlated with increased posterior palatine bone and lateral orbit deformity.
  • No significant difference in hypoglossal canal position was observed between HFM patients and controls.

Conclusions:

  • The developed coordinate system enables quantitative assessment regardless of HFM severity.
  • Mandibular deformity severity aligns with specific superoinferior and anteroposterior deformities in the palatine bone and orbit.
  • This provides a novel tool for objective HFM evaluation.
