Area of Science:

  • Food safety
  • Analytical chemistry
  • Biotechnology

Background:

  • Mycotoxins in food and crops pose significant health risks and economic burdens globally.
  • Current detection methods like chromatography and ELISA are often time-consuming and require expensive equipment.
  • There is a critical need for rapid, sensitive, and portable mycotoxin detection technologies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate a novel, highly sensitive, and portable detection method for aflatoxin B1.
  • To establish a competitive magnetic immunodetection (cMID) assay as a viable alternative to conventional techniques.
  • To reduce the risks associated with processing mycotoxin-contaminated commodities.

Main Methods:

  • Development of a competitive magnetic immunodetection (cMID) assay using immunofiltration columns.
  • Utilized competitive enrichment of biotinylated antibodies and magnetic labeling with streptavidin-functionalized particles.
  • Quantification of aflatoxin B1 via frequency mixing technology, with competitive ELISA as a reference method.

Main Results:

  • The cMID assay demonstrated high sensitivity for aflatoxin B1 detection.
  • Achieved a detection limit comparable to the established competitive ELISA (cELISA) reference method (1.1 ng/ml).
  • Successfully validated the cMID approach under optimized assay conditions.

Conclusions:

  • The developed cMID method is a promising, sensitive, and portable tool for aflatoxin B1 detection.
  • This technology offers a faster and potentially more cost-effective solution for mycotoxin analysis.
  • cMID can contribute to mitigating the risks posed by contaminated food and agricultural products.
