The haired angularis oris axial pattern flap (HAOF) successfully repaired large hard palate defects in dogs. This technique offers a viable surgical option for complex oral reconstructions.

Background:

  • Large defects in the hard palate can be challenging to reconstruct.
  • The angularis oris artery is a potential source for axial pattern flaps.

Observation:

  • A haired angularis oris axial pattern flap (HAOF) was utilized for reconstruction in an anatomical cadaver study and three dogs with hard palate neoplasia.
  • The flap, incorporating skin and buccal mucosa, was rotated on the angularis oris artery, with the haired surface oriented orally.

Findings:

  • Reconstruction was feasible for defects extending to the maxillary canine tooth.
  • One dog showed complete healing without complications for over 600 days.
  • Minor dehiscence occurred in another case, but without long-term issues.
