Angle Closure Glaucoma: Treatment01:28

Angle Closure Glaucoma: Treatment

1.0K
Angle-closure glaucoma, or closed-angle glaucoma, is an eye condition where the iris bulges out and blocks the iridocorneal angle, resulting in a buildup of aqueous humor and increased intraocular pressure. Immediate medical attention is necessary due to the sudden onset of symptoms. The treatment for angle-closure glaucoma includes short-term and long-term approaches. Short-term treatment involves using eye drops like pilocarpine to lower intraocular pressure by increasing aqueous humor...

Aneurysm III: Interprofessional Care

Aneurysm management involves either conservative medical therapy or surgical intervention, depending on the size and symptoms of the aneurysm. Conservative management is generally reserved for smaller, asymptomatic aneurysms, while larger or symptomatic aneurysms often necessitate surgical repair.Conservative Medical TherapyFor small, asymptomatic aneurysms, particularly abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) less than 5.5 centimeters in diameter, conservative medical therapy is recommended. Cell Motility through Blebbing01:16

Cell Motility through Blebbing

2.3K
Blebs are a type of membrane protrusion formed by the internal hydrostatic pressure of the cytoplasm. Blebs are observed in several cell types, including fibroblasts, immune cells, and single-celled organisms like the amoeba. The primary function of blebs is cell locomotion and apoptosis, but they are also found during necrosis and cell division. The life cycle of a bleb comprises an initiation phase followed by the expansion and retraction phases.

Summary

A novel conjunctival plication technique effectively repairs ischemic bleb leaks after glaucoma surgery. This safe and easy method resolves bleb leakage without recurrence or further ischemia.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Glaucoma Surgery
  • Surgical Complications

Background:

  • Bleb leakage is a significant complication following glaucoma filtering surgery, often treated with mitomycin C.
  • Existing surgical methods for sealing bleb leaks can be complex or carry risks.
  • Ischemic bleb formation increases the likelihood of leakage and surgical failure.

Observation:

  • A new conjunctival plication technique was developed to address ischemic bleb leaks.
  • The method involves dissecting conjunctiva and using sutures to advance non-ischemic tissue over the bleb.
  • This technique was applied to two patients with persistent bleb leakage.

Findings:

  • The conjunctival plication method successfully sealed bleb leaks in both reported cases.
  • No recurrence of bleb leakage was observed post-operatively.
  • The procedure did not induce further ischemic changes in the conjunctiva.

Implications:

  • Conjunctival plication offers a safe, effective, and straightforward surgical option for managing ischemic bleb leaks.
  • This technique may improve outcomes for patients experiencing complications after glaucoma surgery.
  • Further studies could validate this method in a larger patient cohort.
