    Summary

This study characterized acute monocytic leukemia (AMoL) cells using differentiation markers. Cell marker analysis aids in diagnosing AMoL and understanding leukemic cell function.

    Area of Science:

    • Hematology
    • Oncology
    • Cell Biology

    Background:

    • Acute monocytic leukemia (AMoL) is a challenging hematologic malignancy.
    • Accurate diagnosis and understanding of leukemic cell characteristics are crucial for effective treatment.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To characterize leukemic cells in acute monocytic leukemia (AMoL) using multiple differentiation markers.
    • To evaluate the utility of cell marker analysis in diagnosing AMoL and assessing leukemic cell maturation.

    Main Methods:

    • Analysis of leukemic cells from nine AMoL cases.
    • Utilized differentiation markers including phagocytosis, Fc receptor expression, and esterase staining (alpha-naphthyl acetate esterase and naphthol AS-D chloroacetate esterase).

    Main Results:

    • Leukemic cells exhibited phagocytic activity and Fc receptor expression.
    • Positive staining for alpha-naphthyl acetate esterase and negative staining for naphthol AS-D chloroacetate esterase were observed in most cases.
    • Subtle variations in marker expression indicated differing degrees of leukemic cell maturation or activation.

    Conclusions:

    • Cell marker analysis is a valuable tool complementing conventional morphology for AMoL diagnosis.
    • Marker analysis aids in recognizing neoplastic cells and may offer insights into the functional status of AMoL cells.
