Diabetic Eye Disease: Advancements in Technology, Detection, and Access to Care
Abstract:
OBJECTIVE: To educate pharmacists on advancements in, detection of, and access to care for diabetic eye disease (DED) by reviewing the etiologies, treatment options, and technological evolution in teleophthalmology for DED.
DATA SYNTHESIS: The literature included review articles, original research articles, treatment information, and advancements in teleophthalmology for DED.
CONCLUSION: DED encompasses a group of eye conditions that affect people with diabetes, which primarily includes diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema but may also include cataracts, ocular surface disease, and glaucoma. Emerging technologies with retinal imaging tools and artificial intelligence have increased access to care for diabetic people with diabetes in many studies. Pharmacists familiar with diabetic screening advancements can work closely with primary care physicians and ophthalmologists to better educate patients on treatment regimens.
