This study developed a Chinese version of the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5) for screening post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The pilot test showed the Chinese PCL-5 is a reliable and valid screening tool for PTSD in Taiwan.
Area of Science:
- Psychiatry
- Psychometrics
- Mental Health Research
Background:
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is prevalent but often underdiagnosed.
- Screening tools are crucial for identifying PTSD in clinical and social settings.
- A validated measure is needed for the Chinese-speaking population.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop and pilot test a Chinese version of the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5).
- To evaluate the reliability and validity of the Chinese PCL-5 in adult psychiatric patients.
- To assess its utility as a screening tool in the Chinese context.
Main Methods:
- Development and pilot testing of the Chinese PCL-5.
- Evaluation of reliability and validity in a sample of 56 adult psychiatric patients in Taiwan.
- Utilized online methods for research facilitation.
Main Results:
- The Chinese PCL-5 demonstrated good internal consistency.
- The scale showed significant associations with trauma exposure and other mental health constructs.
- Participants with diagnosed PTSD scored significantly higher on the Chinese PCL-5, indicating good discrimination.
Conclusions:
- The Chinese PCL-5 shows promise as a reliable and valid screening tool for PTSD.
- Further psychometric evaluation is recommended for broader application.
- This tool can aid practitioners in identifying PTSD in Chinese-speaking populations.
