Area of Science:

  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Medical Technology
  • Orthopedic Surgery

Background:

  • Rapid prototyping (RP), also known as 3D printing (3DP), converts anatomical images into physical models.
  • 3DP technology advancements have increased speed and reduced costs.
  • This technology presents a promising innovation for spine surgery.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore the applications of 3D printing in spine surgery.
  • To highlight the benefits and potential drawbacks of RP in this field.

Main Methods:

  • Review of current 3D printing technologies and their integration into surgical practices.
  • Analysis of potential applications across various stages of spine surgery.

Main Results:

  • 3DP can be extensively used in preoperative planning, surgical simulations, patient-clinician communication, education, intraoperative guidance, and implantable devices.
  • Increased production speeds and decreased costs enhance the feasibility of 3DP in spine surgery.

Conclusions:

  • 3D printing is a valuable tool with diverse applications in spine surgery.
  • Further studies are required to overcome the existing challenges and limitations of RP in spine surgery.
