    Summary

Athletes’ personal investments in rehabilitation predicted their commitment. However, the Sport Commitment Model (SCM) factors did not predict rehabilitation behaviors, suggesting further research is needed to understand athlete motivation.

    Area of Science:

    • Sport Psychology
    • Rehabilitation Science
    • Athletic Training

    Background:

    • Sustaining effort in injury rehabilitation is crucial for athletes.
    • The Sport Commitment Model (SCM) identifies factors influencing commitment to sport participation.
    • Applying SCM to rehabilitation may enhance adherence and outcomes.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To explore the applicability of the Sport Commitment Model (SCM) in the context of sport injury rehabilitation.
    • To investigate factors predicting commitment to rehabilitation among injured athletes.

    Main Methods:

    • Correlational design utilized in a Division I athletic training setting.
    • 51 injured intercollegiate athletes completed SCM measures.
    • Athletic trainers and students assessed athlete effort, energy, and intensity.

    Main Results:

    • Higher perceptions of personal investments were associated with greater rehabilitation commitment.
    • None of the SCM determinants predicted athletic trainer-assessed rehabilitation behaviors.
    • Enjoyment, involvement opportunities, attractive alternatives, social constraints, and perceived costs did not predict commitment or behaviors.

    Conclusions:

    • Personal investments are key predictors of rehabilitation commitment.
    • Further research is needed to understand rehabilitation motivation and behaviors.
    • Exploring commitment constructs can inform strategies to improve rehabilitation adherence.
