Summary

The MSReactor (MSR) cognitive test moderately correlates with the Processing Speed Test (PST) in multiple sclerosis patients, showing shared cognitive processes and acceptable reliability for monitoring psychomotor speed, attention, and working memory.

Background:

  • Cognitive function monitoring in ambulatory settings requires simple, reproducible tests.
  • MSReactor (MSR) is a game-like web platform for screening psychomotor speed, attention, and working memory.
  • The Processing Speed Test (PST) is a validated component of the Multiple Sclerosis Performance Test (MSPT).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the baseline and 6-month predictive correlations between the MSReactor (MSR) computerised cognitive battery and the Processing Speed Test (PST).

Main Methods:

  • Prospective enrollment of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) patients.
  • Patients completed MSR and PST during 6-monthly clinic visits.
  • Pearson's product-moment coefficients with partial correlation adjustment were calculated for MSR reaction times (SRT, CRT, OBK) and PST.

Main Results:

  • 379 RRMS patients were enrolled; mean age 40.4 years, median EDSS 1.5.
  • Baseline PST scores correlated with MSR reaction times: SRT (R=-0.40), CRT (R=-0.44), OBK (R=-0.47), p <0.05.
  • Moderate correlation between 6-month MSR and PST for SRT (R=-0.37), CRT (R=-0.44), and OBK (R=-0.43), p <0.001.

Conclusions:

  • MSR-assessed psychomotor speed, attention, and working memory correlate moderately with PST at baseline and 6 months.
  • These findings suggest overlapping cognitive processes are measured by both tests.
  • Six-month test-retest reliability was acceptable for both MSR and PST.
