Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess maternity care providers' involvement in research.
  • To evaluate their perception of research relevance.
  • To identify facilitators and barriers to research participation.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 145 maternity care providers (midwives, nurses, sonographers, obstetricians, hospital doctors).
  • Data were collected from May to October 2018 at a tertiary-referral university-based teaching maternity hospital.
  • The survey assessed research experience, perceived importance, understanding of methodology, and confidence.

Main Results:

  • Nearly 50% of participants reported never conducting research.
  • Medical staff had more research opportunities and experience than midwives (p < 0.05).
  • While all agreed research is vital for quality care, medical staff reported higher confidence and understanding of research methodology than midwives (p < 0.05).

Conclusions:

  • Increased research opportunities and targeted training are needed to boost maternity care providers' research involvement, particularly for midwives.
  • Addressing these needs can generate essential evidence for pregnant women's care.
  • This can help bridge the gap in research specific to pregnancy.
