Patient self-management is promoted but often challenging for individuals.
Limited research exists on the nature of patient work and its integration into daily life.

Purpose of the Study:

To review the characteristics of patient work in adult patients.
To understand the tasks imposed by health conditions and contextual factors.

Main Methods:

Systematic scoping review with narrative synthesis.
Data from PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO (August 2013-August 2018).
Included studies assessed physical/cognitive tasks and contextual factors.

Main Results:

67 publications reviewed; diverse patient work tasks identified (physical, cognitive, social).
Patient work is influenced by micro, meso, and macro contextual factors.
Most patient work is solitary, private, cognitively demanding, and lacks support.

Conclusions:

Patient health management involves substantial, often invisible, work.
Understanding the burden and context of patient work is crucial for intervention design.
Interventions must consider the impact on internal states, coping, daily routines, and long-term sustainability.
