Long-term Potentiation01:25

Long-term Potentiation

3.2K
Long-term potentiation, or LTP, is one of the ways by which synaptic plasticity—changes in the strength of chemical synapses—can occur in the brain. LTP is the process of synaptic strengthening that occurs over time between pre and postsynaptic neuronal connections. The synaptic strengthening of LTP works in opposition to the synaptic weakening of long-term depression (LTD) and together are the main mechanisms that underlie learning and memory.

Associative Learning01:27

Associative Learning

1.1K
Associative learning is a fundamental concept in behavioral psychology, wherein a connection is established between two stimuli or events, leading to a learned response. This process is critical in understanding how behaviors are acquired and modified. Conditioning, the mechanism through which associations are formed, can be divided into two main types: classical conditioning and operant conditioning, each elucidating different aspects of associative learning.
Classical conditioning, also known...

Sign Test for Matched Pairs01:17

Sign Test for Matched Pairs

337
The sign test for matched pairs offers a robust method for comparing two paired samples, often for the effects of an intervention in one of them. This method is very useful in situations where the underlying distribution of the data is unknown. The test compares two related samples—often pre- and post-treatment measurements on the same subjects—to determine if there are significant differences in their median values.
To conduct the sign test, we first calculate the differences in...

Generalization, Discrimination, and Extinction01:24

Generalization, Discrimination, and Extinction

1.2K
Generalization, discrimination, and extinction are key concepts in operant conditioning that influence how behaviors are learned and maintained.
Generalization occurs when a behavior reinforced in one context is performed in similar situations. For instance, a student who studies diligently for calculus and receives excellent grades might apply the same study habits to psychology and history, expecting similar results. Generalization shows how learning in one setting can influence behavior in...

Social Facilitation01:04

Social Facilitation

35.9K
Not all intergroup interactions lead to negative outcomes. Sometimes, being in a group situation can improve performance. Social facilitation occurs when an individual performs better when an audience is watching than when the individual performs the behavior alone. This typically occurs when people are performing a task for which they are skilled.

Summary

Retrieval practice, or testing, aids learning, but this benefit diminishes when cues and responses are rearranged. Transfer of learning occurs unless multiple cues are used in training and responses differ between training and testing.

Area of Science:

  • Cognitive Psychology
  • Educational Psychology
  • Memory Research

Background:

  • Retrieval practice (testing) is a powerful learning tool.
  • The transfer of learning from training to new contexts is crucial for real-world application.
  • Previous research indicates testing effects are robust, but conditions for transfer need further exploration.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the conditions under which learning from retrieval practice transfers to rearranged cue-response pairs.
  • To examine the specificity of learning effects for word pairs versus triplets.
  • To test theoretical explanations for observed transfer patterns.

Main Methods:

  • Four experiments were conducted using word-pair and word-triplet learning paradigms.
  • Participants underwent retrieval practice (testing) or restudy control conditions.
  • Cue-response arrangements were manipulated between training and final tests.

Main Results:

  • Strong transfer of learning was observed for word pairs but not for triplets when cues were rearranged.
  • Transfer for triplets was not entirely absent and did not solely depend on exact cue-response reversal.
  • Transfer failure occurred when multiple independent cues were presented during training and responses differed between training and final tests.

Conclusions:

  • The specificity of learning in retrieval practice depends on the number of cues and response consistency.
  • A dual-memory theory combined with an inclusive-OR representation explains the observed patterns.
  • Further research is needed to clarify the role of training test accuracy in learning specificity.
