Summary

This study found that patients with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) primarily develop autoantibodies affecting the hematopoietic system, such as immune thrombocytopenia. Non-hematological autoimmune diseases were not more frequent in these patients.

Background:

  • Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) is a lymphoid malignancy.
  • The association between CLL and autoimmune phenomena requires further investigation.

Observation:

  • Seventy-nine CLL patients were assessed for autoimmune diseases and autoantibodies.
  • Clinical evaluation included screening for polymyositis, pernicious anemia, and chronic active hepatitis.
  • Laboratory tests included direct Coombs' test and M-protein detection.

Findings:

  • One patient had polymyositis; two had features suggestive of pernicious anemia and chronic active hepatitis.
  • Direct Coombs' test was positive in 7% of patients.
  • Immune thrombocytopenia was observed in 8.1% of patients.

  • Implications:

    • Autoantibody development in CLL appears restricted to the hematopoietic system.
