Titan cell formation is unique to Cryptococcus species complex

Titanization, a unique virulence factor in Cryptococcus yeasts, is largely restricted to the C. neoformans/C. gattii species complex. Other tested yeast species, including Saccharomyces cerevisiae, did not exhibit significant titanization in vitro.
