Psychological and Sociocultural Causes of Schizophrenia01:29

Psychological and Sociocultural Causes of Schizophrenia

373
Schizophrenia, a complex psychiatric disorder, has been historically misunderstood. Early psychological theories attributed its origins to childhood trauma and unresponsive parenting. However, contemporary research largely rejects these notions, favoring the vulnerability-stress hypothesis. This model proposes that individuals with a genetic predisposition to schizophrenia may develop the disorder following exposure to significant environmental stressors. Notably, studies on high-risk...

Bullying

8.7K
A modern form of aggression is bullying. As you learn in your study of child development, socializing and playing with other children is beneficial for children’s psychological development. However, as you may have experienced as a child, not all play behavior has positive outcomes. Some children are aggressive and want to play roughly. Other children are selfish and do not want to share toys. One form of negative social interactions among children that has become a national concern is...

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

631
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. It affects approximately 5-8% of children globally, with around 60-70% of cases persisting into adulthood. ADHD has significant implications for educational attainment, social interactions, and occupational success.

Depressive Disorders: Etiology01:27

Depressive Disorders: Etiology

346
Depressive disorders result from a complex interplay of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors, each contributing uniquely to the development and persistence of the condition. Understanding these factors provides critical insight into the multifaceted nature of depression.
Biological Factors in Depression
Biological predispositions significantly influence the risk of developing depressive disorders. Genetic studies highlight the role of variations in the serotonin transporter...

Attachment Styles01:24

Attachment Styles

157
Jeffrey Simpson's attachment theory suggests that early caregiver relationships shape lasting patterns of behavior and emotional regulation, known as attachment styles. These patterns are organized along two key dimensions: self-esteem and interpersonal trust. The intersection of these dimensions produces four primary attachment styles that typically persist throughout life and significantly influence how individuals form and maintain relationships.Secure Attachment StyleIndividuals with a...

Conduct Disorder01:28

Conduct Disorder

380
Conduct disorder is a complex mental health diagnosis characterized by a repetitive and persistent pattern of behavior that violates societal norms, the rights of others, or age-appropriate rules. The diagnostic criteria for conduct disorder require the presence of at least three problematic behaviors within the past 12 months, with at least one occurring in the past six months. These behaviors are grouped into four categories: aggression toward people and animals; destruction of property;...

Summary

Childhood adversities significantly increase the risk of suicidal behavior throughout life. Experiencing multiple adversities, especially physical and sexual abuse, elevates the danger, particularly in adolescence and early adulthood.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Public Health
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Suicide is a leading cause of death globally.
  • The impact of childhood adversities on suicidal behavior is not fully understood.
  • Understanding these risk factors is crucial for prevention strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between childhood adversities and suicidal behavior.
  • To identify specific types of adversities and suicidal behaviors.
  • To explore the life-course impact of these factors in Bangladesh.

Main Methods:

  • A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted in Cumilla, Bangladesh.
  • 120 patients with suicidal behavior were recruited from hospitals.
  • Data collected included socio-demographics, childhood adversities, and suicidal behaviors.

Main Results:

  • 59.16% experienced composite adversities; physical abuse (2.5%), sexual abuse (16.67%).
  • Suicidal ideation was 70%, attempts 45%. Childhood sexual abuse was a strong risk factor for younger individuals.
  • Multiple adversities increased suicide attempt risk threefold; 65% had psychiatric disorders.

Conclusions:

  • Childhood adversities are significant risk factors for suicidal behavior onset and persistence.
  • Physical and sexual abuse are key risk factors, especially during adolescence.
  • Interventions targeting childhood adversities are vital for suicide prevention across the life course.
