Summary

Checkpoint inhibitors like durvalumab rarely cause ocular side effects. This case shows retinal vasculitis and macular edema resolved with methylprednisolone, allowing continued cancer treatment.

Background:

Checkpoint inhibitors, such as durvalumab, are increasingly used for cancer treatment.
Ocular side effects from these immunotherapies are uncommon but can be severe.

Observation:

A 64-year-old man receiving durvalumab for non-small-cell lung carcinoma developed retinal vasculitis.
The patient also presented with macular edema, a serious vision-threatening condition.

Findings:

Prompt treatment with three doses of methylprednisolone led to the resolution of retinal vasculitis.
Macular edema significantly improved during the follow-up period.

Implications:

This case highlights the importance of monitoring for rare ocular side effects of checkpoint inhibitors.
Early intervention with corticosteroids can effectively manage these adverse events, potentially avoiding treatment cessation.
