Summary

This study investigated cellular immunity in psoriasis and lichen planus. Psoriasis patients showed immune responses to their own skin cells, suggesting T-cell autoimmunity in disease development.

Background:

  • Psoriasis and lichen planus are chronic inflammatory skin diseases with unknown causes.
  • Cellular immunity, particularly T-cell responses, is implicated in autoimmune conditions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate epidermal cell recognition by autologous immune cells in psoriasis and lichen planus.
  • To determine if cellular immunity plays a role in the pathogenesis of these skin diseases.

Main Methods:

  • Assays included lymphocyte transformation, leukocyte migration-inhibition, and cell-mediated cytotoxicity.
  • Autologous epidermal cells (EC) and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from patients and healthy controls were used.
  • Statistical analyses compared responses between patient groups and controls.

Main Results:

  • No cytotoxicity against autologous EC was observed.
  • Psoriasis patients' EC and PBMC induced significant lymphocyte transformation, potentially linked to Goeckerman therapy.
  • Leukocyte migration-inhibition factor release was stimulated by autologous EC and PBMC from psoriasis patients, irrespective of therapy.

Conclusions:

  • Evidence supports a role for T-cell mediated autoimmunity in the pathogenesis of psoriasis.
  • Cellular recognition of the epidermis by autologous immune cells is associated with psoriasis.
  • Further research is needed to elucidate the specific autoimmune mechanisms in psoriasis.
