Optimizing Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) with multiple Software-Defined Networking (SDN) controllers is challenging. The Cuckoo Placement of Controllers (Cuckoo-PC) algorithm effectively minimizes sensor-controller distances, improving network performance.
Area of Science:
- Computer Science
- Network Engineering
- Optimization Algorithms
Background:
- Multiple Software-Defined Networking (SDN) controllers enhance Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) reliability and performance.
- Inter-controller synchronization overhead is a key challenge with multiple SDN controllers in WSNs.
- Optimal controller placement is crucial for WSN performance under synchronization constraints.
Purpose of the Study:
- To formulate the optimal SDN controller placement problem in WSNs as an optimization problem.
- To propose the Cuckoo Placement of Controllers (Cuckoo-PC) algorithm to solve this problem.
- To evaluate Cuckoo-PC's performance against existing state-of-the-art methods.
Main Methods:
- Formulation of the SDN controller placement as an optimization problem.
- Development of the Cuckoo Placement of Controllers (Cuckoo-PC) algorithm, inspired by the Cuckoo optimization algorithm.
- Comparative performance analysis against Simulated Annealing (SA), Quantum Annealing (QA), and Integer Linear Programming (ILP).
Main Results:
- Cuckoo-PC significantly reduces the average distance between sensors and controllers.
- Performance improvements of up to 13% (vs. SA) and 9% (vs. QA) in network performance.
- Cuckoo-PC achieves results comparable to ILP with a deviation of less than 1%, in significantly less time.
Conclusions:
- The Cuckoo Placement of Controllers (Cuckoo-PC) algorithm is an effective method for optimizing SDN controller placement in WSNs.
- Cuckoo-PC offers a superior balance between performance gains and computational time compared to SA and QA.
- The proposed algorithm provides a practical and efficient solution for enhancing WSN performance through optimal controller deployment.
