Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Aging populations present unique social and healthcare challenges.
  • Depression in older adults, particularly in China, is increasing.
  • Older adults with depression often experience amotivation, a symptom targeted by behavioral activation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To pilot a guided self-help behavioral activation intervention for older adults with depression.
  • To assess the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of this intervention.

Main Methods:

  • Pilot randomized controlled trial with 60 inpatients aged 60-70 with major depressive disorder.
  • Intervention group received 6 telephone-delivered guided self-help behavioral activation sessions.
  • Control group was on a 6-week waiting list; outcomes measured included symptom severity, recovery, satisfaction, and cost.

Main Results:

  • Recruitment was planned to commence after study approval in November 2019.
  • Data collection and analysis were projected for completion by December 2020 and June 2021, respectively.
  • Results were intended for dissemination through publications and conferences.

Conclusions:

  • This is the first study in China to explore guided self-help interventions for older adults with depression.
  • The intervention is adapted from an evidence-based behavioral activation treatment.
  • Strengths include modular design, generalizability, and broad inclusion criteria.
