Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify predictors of insufficient multivitamin use among women of childbearing age.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of well-child visits (WCVs) as an access point for maternal health interventions.

Main Methods:

  • Quality improvement study utilizing retrospective chart review.
  • Analysis of demographic information and maternal behaviors from 758 women across 2,706 WCVs.
  • Insufficient multivitamin use defined as self-reported non-use at one or more visits.

Main Results:

  • Insufficient MVI use was associated with younger maternal age (OR 0.96).
  • Lower educational attainment (less than high school, OR 3.3) and public insurance (OR 1.56) predicted insufficient use.
  • Increased attendance at WCVs correlated with higher rates of insufficient MVI use (OR 1.46).

  • Targeted interventions are needed for younger, low-income, and less educated women to improve MVI use during the interconception period.
  • WCVs serve as a practical setting for assessing and addressing maternal MVI use.
  • Improving MVI adherence can positively impact maternal and infant health outcomes.
