Language serves as a bridge between ideas and communication, influencing how individuals perceive and interact with the world. Psychologists have long debated whether language shapes thought or vice versa. This discussion gained grip with Edward Sapir and Benjamin Lee Whorf in the 1940s, who proposed that language determines thought, a concept known as linguistic determinism. Summary

Individuals with functional neurological disorder (FND) and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) share similar attentional control deficits and somatic interpretation biases. These findings suggest common underlying mechanisms and potential therapeutic targets for these conditions.

Background:

  • Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) are conditions with overlapping symptoms and proposed shared mechanisms.
  • Altered attentional processing and interpretative biases are hypothesized to play a role in FND.
  • Experimental comparison of these cognitive mechanisms between FND and CFS is lacking.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To experimentally compare cognitive task performance in individuals with FND, CFS, and healthy controls (HC).
  • To investigate attentional bias towards illness-relevant stimuli, attentional control, and somatic interpretation biases in these groups.

Main Methods:

  • Cognitive tasks assessing visual probe task (attentional bias), attention network task (attentional control), and interpretative bias task.
  • Inclusion of participants diagnosed with FND, CFS, and healthy controls.
  • Self-reported measures of depression, anxiety, fatigue, and general health were also collected.

Main Results:

  • Participants with CFS, but not FND, showed a significant attentional bias towards illness-relevant stimuli compared to HC.
  • Both FND and CFS groups exhibited significantly worse attentional control compared to HC.
  • Individuals with FND and CFS demonstrated significantly greater somatic interpretative bias than HC.

Conclusions:

  • Shared deficits in attentional control and somatic interpretative bias between FND and CFS support common underlying mechanisms.
  • Interpretative bias towards somatic and illness-relevant stimuli may represent a viable therapeutic target for functional disorders.
