    Area of Science:

    • Medical Informatics
    • Public Health
    • Immunization Practices

    Background:

    • Accurate vaccine data recording is essential but often challenged by documentation errors.
    • Limited use of vaccine two-dimensional (2D) barcode scanning hinders efficient data capture.
    • Strategies to enhance scanner adoption and data accuracy are needed.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To identify effective strategies for increasing vaccine 2D barcode scanner utilization.
    • To evaluate the impact of improved scanning rates on vaccine record accuracy and completeness.

    Main Methods:

    • A pilot study involving 27 sites tested four strategies: training only, commitment card, scanning report, and a combination.
    • 72,000 vaccine records were analyzed for completeness, accuracy, and scanning rates.
    • Interventions were compared against a training-only control group.

    Main Results:

    • Commitment cards and scanning reports significantly increased vaccinator scanning rates compared to training alone.
    • The use of scanning substantially improved record completeness and accuracy.
    • Manual entry resulted in 1 in 9 records with expiration date errors; scanning reduced this to 1 in 5,000.

    Conclusions:

    • Two-dimensional (2D) barcode scanning demonstrates significant potential to minimize omissions and inaccuracies in vaccine records.
    • Accurate vaccine data is vital for effective public health responses, including recalls and patient tracing.
    • Widespread adoption of 2D scanning can substantially enhance the quality of vaccine documentation and healthcare delivery.
