Area of Science:

  • Psychometrics
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Anxiety Disorders

Background:

  • The Fear Questionnaire (FQ) by Marks & Mathews (1979) is a widely used tool for assessing phobic conditions.
  • Evaluating the psychometric properties of translated instruments is crucial for cross-cultural research and clinical application.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the psychometric properties of a Dutch translation of the short Fear Questionnaire (FQ).
  • To evaluate the validity of the FQ by comparing scores across different phobic subgroups (agoraphobics, social phobics, simple phobics).
  • To determine the clinical utility of the FQ for diagnosing and understanding phobic disorders.

Main Methods:

  • A Dutch version of the FQ was administered to 143 outpatients with phobias (100 women, 43 men).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Psychometric properties, including internal consistency and validity, were analyzed.
  • Scores were compared between agoraphobics, social phobics, and simple phobics.
  • Main Results:

    • All FQ scales demonstrated sufficient internal consistency.
    • The Total Phobia scale offered limited additional information beyond its subscales.
    • Most FQ scales correlated significantly with neuroticism.
    • The Social Phobia subscale showed a strong association with social anxiety.
    • Agoraphobia and Social Phobia subscales effectively differentiated between patient categories.
    • The Blood/Injury subscale's validity could not be assessed due to insufficient comparative data.

    Conclusions:

    • The Dutch FQ is a psychometrically sound instrument for assessing phobic patients.
    • The FQ subscales are valuable for differentiating between types of phobias and assessing related constructs like social anxiety.
    • The study provides a basis for developing normative data for the FQ in phobic populations.
