Summary

Early amputation may benefit patients with crush syndrome (CS) experiencing progressive deterioration despite aggressive treatment. This case highlights the potential value of considering amputation early, even with questionable limb viability, to improve patient outcomes.

Area of Science:

  • Trauma Surgery
  • Emergency Medicine
  • Critical Care

Background:

  • Crush syndrome (CS) presents significant morbidity and mortality due to severe rhabdomyolysis, reperfusion injuries, electrolyte imbalances, and organ failure.

  • The therapeutic role of fasciotomy for compartment syndrome in crush injuries remains debated, and patient-centered benefits of early amputation are not well-established.
