Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

662
Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Psychometrics

Background:

  • Effective home assessments are crucial for individuals with dementia and their caregivers.
  • The Home Environment Assessment Protocol-Revised (HEAP-R) aims to provide efficient and reliable home evaluations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To establish the content validity index (CVI) of the HEAP-R.
  • To measure the concurrent criterion validity of the HEAP-R.
  • To examine the test-retest reliability of the HEAP-R.

Main Methods:

  • Six experts assessed content validity (CVI).
  • Twenty-one caregiver/person with dementia dyads evaluated concurrent validity against HEAP.
  • Seventeen occupational therapists assessed test-retest reliability using video recordings.

Main Results:

  • The HEAP-R achieved a high content validity index (CVI) of .980.
  • Strong concurrent validity was found for hazards (r=.792), adaptations (r=.742), clutter (r=.843), and comfort (r=.958).
  • Acceptable test-retest reliability was observed for hazards (r=.820), adaptations (r=.887), and clutter (r=.696), with moderate reliability for visual cues (r=.487).

Conclusions:

  • Pilot data suggest the HEAP-R possesses preliminary content validity, concurrent criterion validity, and test-retest reliability.
  • The HEAP-R demonstrates potential as a tool for home environment assessment in dementia care.
  • Further robust psychometric analysis is recommended before widespread clinical implementation.
