Background:

Professional identity is closely intertwined with social identity, particularly for nurses working in group environments.
Limited research exists on how nurses' daily work and group dynamics influence their professional identity development.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the development of professional identity among nurses through their group performances in a specific healthcare setting.
To explore the influence of organizational culture and group activities on nurses' professional identity.

Main Methods:

An integrated ethnographic case study design was employed in two Australian acute healthcare clinical wards.
Social Identity Theory (SIT) guided the examination of two professional activities (handover and multidisciplinary meetings).
Data were collected through observations, interviews, and fieldnotes from nurses and allied health professionals between 2012 and 2014.

Main Results:

Group efficacy was a key factor in developing professional identity during homogenous nursing handover activities.
Self-efficacy was evident in heterogeneous, multidisciplinary professional activities.

Conclusions:

Recognizing core identity-building activities is crucial for professional identity development in nursing.
Understanding the value of specific group activities enhances the development of nurses' professional identity.
