Teratogenicity

The ability of a drug to produce structural deformations and functional abnormalities in the developing embryo or the fetus is called teratogenicity, and the drug producing this effect is known as a teratogen. Summary

Fetal intrapericardial teratomas, rare cardiac tumors, require antenatal intervention in many cases. While feasible, these fetal treatments carry higher risks than neonatal interventions.

Background:

Fetal intrapericardial teratomas are rare, benign cardiac tumors presenting significant diagnostic and management challenges.
These tumors can cause critical fetal/neonatal complications, including respiratory distress and cardiac tamponade.

Purpose of the Study:

To comprehensively review and analyze cases of fetal and neonatal intrapericardial teratomas reported since 2000.
To compare the clinical characteristics, treatment strategies, and outcomes between fetal and neonatal groups.

Main Methods:

A comprehensive literature search was conducted for articles published from 2000 onwards.
Data from 61 cases of intrapericardial teratomas (55 fetal, 6 neonatal) were extracted and analyzed.

Main Results:

The fetal group experienced more refractory effusions, necessitating antenatal interventions in 43.6% of cases.
Neonatal cases showed a higher incidence of respiratory distress.
While the fetal group had a higher mortality rate (25.5%), it lacked statistical significance compared to the neonatal group (0%).

Conclusions:

Antenatal treatments for fetal intrapericardial teratomas are feasible but associated with increased risks compared to neonatal management.
Early detection and appropriate management are crucial for improving outcomes in these rare cardiac tumors.
