We describe a rare case of complete heart block in an elderly woman with microscopic polyangiitis (MPA). This finding highlights MPA as a potential cause of heart block, requiring further investigation.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Rheumatology
- Pathology
Background:
- Third-degree complete heart block has various causes, including idiopathic, pathological, and iatrogenic.
- Microscopic polyangiitis (MPA) is a rare autoimmune vasculitis that can affect multiple organs.
Observation:
- An elderly woman presented with symptoms of dyspnea on exertion and dizziness.
- Diagnostic workup revealed third-degree complete heart block.
Findings:
- The patient was diagnosed with microscopic polyangiitis (MPA).
- A rare association between MPA and complete heart block was identified.
Implications:
- This case suggests MPA should be considered in the differential diagnosis of heart block, especially in elderly patients.
- Further research is warranted to elucidate the mechanisms linking MPA and cardiac conduction abnormalities.
