Supervised physical activity programs significantly increased daily moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVLPA) in children with cancer. Familial support, measured by injunctive norms, was key in facilitating these positive changes in physical activity behavior.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Oncology
- Behavioral Science
- Exercise Science
Background:
- The Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) is utilized to understand physical activity adoption.
- Previous research has explored informational and motivational factors in physical activity.
- This study focuses on children undergoing cancer treatment.
Purpose of the Study:
- To examine changes in children's physical activity levels during a supervised program.
- To describe the evolution of TPB constructs, self-reported fitness, and self-esteem.
- To enhance understanding of physical activity behavior in pediatric cancer patients.
Main Methods:
- 16 children (8 boys, 8 girls) with cancer participated.
- Psychosocial questionnaires were administered pre- and post-intervention.
- Measures included TPB constructs, self-reported fitness, self-esteem, and daily physical activity.
Main Results:
- Daily moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVLPA) significantly increased by 13.8 min/day.
- The program positively influenced children's TPB measures and MVLPA.
- TPB explained 36.2% of MVLPA variance, with injunctive norms being significant.
Conclusions:
- Physical activity support is crucial upon cancer diagnosis for pediatric patients.
- Familial support, indicated by injunctive norms, facilitates children's physical activity.
- Interventions should consider TPB components and family involvement.
