Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Public Health
  • Exercise Science

Background:

  • Mental well-being is a critical aspect of public health.
  • The relationship between physical activity and mental health is an area of ongoing research.
  • Previous studies suggest a positive correlation, but confounding factors need consideration.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between participation in physical activities and psychological well-being.
  • To explore the mediating role of subjective physical health in this association.
  • To control for sociodemographic and other potential confounding variables.

Main Methods:

  • A representative sample of 401 adults in Illinois was surveyed in 1984.
  • Data on exercise, sports, physical activities, and psychological well-being were collected.
  • Statistical analyses controlled for sociodemographic characteristics, instrumentalism, and overweight.

Main Results:

  • Increased participation in exercise, sports, and physical activities was associated with improved psychological well-being.
  • Improved subjective physical health partially mediated this association.
  • Exercise was linked to decreased symptoms of depression, anxiety, and malaise.

Conclusions:

  • Physical activity is associated with enhanced psychological well-being in the general adult population.
  • Subjective physical health plays a role in the mental health benefits of exercise.
  • These findings support the integration of physical activity into public health strategies for mental wellness.
