Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the associations between PUD and adult attachment styles.
  • To examine the relationship between PUD, adult attachment, and white matter (WM) fiber tract integrity.

Main Methods:

  • A sample of 144 right-handed males (70 PUD patients, 74 healthy controls) was recruited.
  • Adult attachment was assessed using the Adult Attachment Scales (AAS).
  • Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) was employed to evaluate WM integrity.

Main Results:

  • PUD patients demonstrated significantly lower attachment security compared to healthy controls.
  • Reduced WM integrity was observed in PUD patients, particularly in the corticospinal tract, fronto-occipital fasciculus, and inferior longitudinal fasciculus.
  • A negative correlation was found between "Comfort with Closeness" and WM integrity in specific tracts within PUD patients.

Conclusions:

  • Attachment security plays a significant role in the etiology of PUD at both behavioral and neurological levels.
  • Findings suggest potential links between adult attachment styles and WM integrity in individuals with PUD.
  • Further research, controlling for comorbidities like depression, is warranted to elucidate these complex relationships.
