Summary

Community integration for people with disabilities is an ongoing process, not a single event. Ongoing support services are crucial for full participation and community living after transitioning from institutions.

Area of Science:

  • Disability Studies
  • Community Integration Research
  • Participatory Action Research

Background:

  • The Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 aimed to foster community integration for individuals with disabilities.
  • Despite the ADA's objectives, there is limited understanding of the participation experiences of individuals transitioning from institutional settings to community living.
  • This study addresses the gap in knowledge regarding post-transition community participation for people with disabilities.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore how individuals with disabilities define and experience full participation after transitioning from institutions to the community.
  • To identify environmental factors that act as barriers or facilitators to participation during and after the transition process.
  • To understand the lived experiences of individuals with disabilities during their transition to community life.

Main Methods:

  • A multimethod, participatory action research approach was employed by the ADA-Participatory Action Research Consortium (ADA-PARC).
  • Qualitative data were gathered through semistructured interviews with 153 adults with disabilities across the United States.
  • The research involved collaboration among academics, individuals with disabilities, and community organizations.

Main Results:

  • Transition from institutional care to the community is perceived as an ongoing process, not a discrete event.
  • Full participation is defined by access to everyday occupations and the ability to "live a life."
  • Environmental barriers and facilitators significantly impact participation, alongside the transformative process of developing social identity and moving from isolation to community integration.

Conclusions:

  • Individuals with disabilities require continuous support systems to achieve and maintain full participation in the community post-transition.
  • Occupational therapy practitioners can play a vital role in supporting clients' identity and confidence during and after community transitions.
  • Partnerships between practitioners and disability advocacy groups are essential for facilitating successful community integration.
