Summary
HIV prevention cascades in Ukraine show low access to sterile syringes and condoms for people who inject drugs (PWID). While syringe use was effective, consistent condom use was infrequent, highlighting gaps in HIV prevention programs.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Epidemiology
- Behavioral Science
Background:
- People who inject drugs (PWID) are at high risk of HIV globally.
- HIV prevention cascades offer a framework to improve monitoring and delivery of prevention programs.
- Ukraine faces ongoing challenges in HIV prevention among PWID.
Purpose of the Study:
- To adapt the HIV prevention cascade framework to the context of PWID in Ukraine.
- To assess gaps in needle/syringe programs (NSP) and condom programs (CP).
- To analyze factors associated with achieving "access" and "effective use" outcomes in HIV prevention.
Main Methods:
- Utilized self-reported data from the 2017 integrated bio-behavioural survey among PWID in Ukraine.
- Constructed cascades for needle/syringe and condom programs.
- Evaluated socio-demographic and behavioral variables as correlates of cascade outcomes.
Main Results:
- NSP cascade: 35.7% accessed clean syringes, 94.8% reported effective use (no sharing).
- CP cascade: 34.5% received condoms, 25.9% reported consistent use.
- Access varied by demographics and drug use type; effective use showed different patterns.
Conclusions:
- The cascade framework effectively identified areas for improvement in HIV prevention programming for PWID in Ukraine.
- Access to NSP and CP was substantially below recommended levels.
- Effective syringe use was high, but consistent condom use was infrequent, indicating a need for enhanced strategies.

Healthcare Associated Infections II: Preventive Measures
3.5K
Essential infection prevention measures are based on the knowledge of the infection chain, the modes of transmission in healthcare settings, and the use of the best practices in all healthcare settings. Compulsory public reporting of healthcare-associated infection rates is needed to allow individuals and the community to make informed choices regarding selecting a healthcare facility.

Principles of Disease Surveillance

Disease surveillance is the systematic collection, analysis, and interpretation of health data essential to the planning, implementation, and evaluation of public health practice. This process integrates data dissemination to entities responsible for preventing and controlling disease, injury, and disability. Surveillance systems provide crucial information for action, helping public health authorities make informed decisions to manage and prevent outbreaks, ensure public safety, optimize...

Community Based Intervention

Community-based interventions in mental health represent a paradigm shift from institution-centered care to treatments embedded within the fabric of local communities. By prioritizing inclusion and leveraging existing societal structures, this approach fosters a supportive environment conducive to addressing mental health challenges while promoting individual dignity and agency.

Models of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention II
1.9K
The person's health status fluctuates continually, varying from being in good health to becoming ill and returning to being healthy. To understand the concept of illness prevention, there are two models. First, the health-illness continuum model is a graphic representation of an individual's wellness. It states that a person is considered healthy in the absence of physical disease and the presence of good emotional health.

Models of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention I

A model is a theoretical way to understand a concept or an idea. Models can overcome barriers to health regardless of diverse economic and cultural backgrounds. In addition, models make the task easier by providing different ways to approach complex issues. There are two major health promotion models: the health belief model and the health promotion model.

Sexually Transmitted Infections

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are diseases transmitted primarily through unsafe sexual interactions. Bacteria, viruses, or parasites cause them and can result in severe health complications if untreated.ChlamydiaThe bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis is responsible for the disease Chlamydia, the most common STI in the United States. This peculiar pathogen requires human cells to reproduce, residing intracellularly. The initial infection often goes unnoticed because it typically does not...
