Magnetic Resonance Imaging01:24

Magnetic Resonance Imaging

8.8K
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a noninvasive medical imaging technique based on a phenomenon of nuclear physics discovered in the 1930s, in which matter exposed to magnetic fields and radio waves was found to emit radio signals. In 1970, a physician and researcher named Raymond Damadian noticed that malignant (cancerous) tissue gave off different signals than normal body tissue. He applied for a patent for the first MRI scanning device in clinical use by the early 1980s. The early MRI...

Summary

Neuroschistosomiasis, a rare brain infection, presents as multiple enhancing nodules on MRI. These findings, along with inflamed veins, aid in diagnosing this disabling parasitic disorder.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Radiology
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Neuroschistosomiasis is an underrecognized and potentially disabling neurological disorder.
  • Raising awareness among clinicians and radiologists is crucial for timely diagnosis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To illustrate the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) characteristics of cerebral schistosomiasis.
  • To correlate MRI findings with histopathological evidence of the disease.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of seven patients diagnosed with cerebral schistosomiasis.
  • Correlation of imaging findings with pathological confirmation in six patients and clinical/imaging data in one.

Main Results:

  • All patients exhibited multiple, variable-sized enhancing nodules on MRI.
  • Prominent leptomeningeal or choroidal veins were observed in six patients, associated with the lesions.
  • Histopathology confirmed granulomas around Schistosoma ova in six patients, with evidence of ova within or around blood vessels.

Conclusions:

  • The presence of multiple enhancing nodules with central or peripheral veins in a localized brain region strongly suggests cerebral schistosomiasis.
  • Inflamed cerebral veins may serve as a pathway for Schistosoma ova dissemination within the brain.
