Area of Science:

  • Biomaterials Science
  • Surgical Innovation
  • Medical Device Design

Background:

  • Current sternal reconstruction methods have limitations in clinical applicability.
  • There is a need for adaptable and durable prosthetic solutions for sternal defects.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To design a durable, modular prosthetic kit for sternal reconstruction.
  • To enable intraoperative tailoring of prostheses to individual patient anatomy and function.

Main Methods:

  • A modularized sternal reconstruction system was developed using titanium alloy components.
  • The system was applied intraoperatively in 7 patients undergoing sternal resection for malignancy.

Main Results:

  • The sternal prostheses demonstrated good integration without infection, effusion, or instability.
  • Six out of seven patients recovered well with no local recurrence or prosthesis failure.
  • One patient experienced disease recurrence 4 months post-surgery.

Conclusions:

  • The modular system eliminates the need for pre-operative customization.
  • This adaptable and effective prosthesis shows potential for widespread use in sternal reconstruction.
