Background:

  • Vascular access teams (VATs) receive numerous consults for short peripheral catheter (SPC) placement.
  • A subset of these SPC insertions do not necessitate specialized VAT expertise.
  • Inefficient referral patterns can strain resources and delay care.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate a program training direct care nurses as unit-based vascular access champions.
  • To enhance the placement, care, and maintenance of SPCs by non-VAT staff.
  • To decrease unwarranted referrals to the VAT for SPC insertion.

Main Methods:

  • A training program was developed for direct care nurses to become vascular access champions.
  • Twenty-one nurses from six units participated in the training.
  • Knowledge and confidence regarding SPC insertion, care, and maintenance were assessed pre-training, immediately post-training, and at 6 months.

  • Training significantly increased knowledge and confidence in SPC insertion, care, and maintenance among trained champions and other direct care nurses.
