  • A comprehensive search of YouTube was conducted using specific keywords related to urogynecologic mesh materials.
  • Analysis focused on video characteristics including publisher identity, attitude, country of origin, and publication year.
  • 1128 videos discussing mesh complications were systematically reviewed.

Main Results:

  • In 79% of videos, no distinction was made between stress urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse concerning mesh material.
  • The majority of videos were categorized under News (35.2%), Patients (31.2%), and Doctors (19.6%) groups.
  • Videos from News, Patients, and Lawyers groups predominantly exhibited negative attitudes (75.7%, 92.6%, 99.4% respectively), while Doctors' videos were mostly informative (48.9%).
  • News and Patients' videos originated mainly from the UK, whereas Lawyers' and Doctors' videos were predominantly from the USA.
  • Content from News and Patients' groups increased by an average of 40% annually over the last three years.

Conclusions:

  • YouTube content has significantly contributed to a negative perception of urogynecologic mesh complications.
  • The pervasive influence of social media hinders the achievement of a balanced and healthy resolution to the mesh debate.
