Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between changes in the number of quick returns (QR) over two years and the risk of occupational accidents among nurses.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized two-year follow-up data from 1692 Norwegian nurses in the Survey of Shiftwork, Sleep and Health (SUSSH).
  • Employed negative binomial regression analyses to assess the relationship between changes in QR frequency and occupational accidents, controlling for covariates.

Main Results:

  • An increase in QR frequency from baseline to follow-up was linked to a higher risk of occupational accidents.
  • Nurses experiencing an increase in QR showed significantly higher risks of causing harm to patients/others and equipment.
  • A reduction in QR among those with initially high QR frequency was associated with decreased risks of harm to self and patients/others.

Conclusions:

  • Changes in the number of quick returns over time demonstrate a consistent association with corresponding changes in occupational accident risk for nurses.
  • Monitoring and managing QR frequency is crucial for mitigating occupational accident risks in nursing.
