Background:

  • Trace elements (TE) link environment, lifestyle, and body's homeostasis.
  • Non-essential (toxic) elements are associated with various diseases.
  • Age-related changes in TE levels and their correlations are not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify differences in TE levels between young and old Wistar rats.
  • To investigate age-related differences in TE correlations within and between key tissues.
  • To explore the impact of aging on essential and non-essential element profiles.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of 16 elements in blood and tissues (kidney, liver, heart, testicles) of young (10 weeks) and old (36 months) Wistar rats.
  • Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) for TE determination.
  • Comparison of TE levels and inter-element correlations between age groups.

Main Results:

  • Toxic elements (As, Hg, Cd) were significantly higher in old rats across examined tissues.
