Summary

Elevated prostate cancer markers like prostatic acid phosphatase and osteocalcin indicate poor prognosis. Adjusting detection levels improves accuracy for identifying at-risk patients.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Biochemistry
  • Clinical Diagnostics

Background:

  • Prognostic markers are crucial for managing prostate carcinoma.
  • Current standard cut-off values for tumor markers show limitations in specificity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the prognostic value of serum markers in prostate cancer patients.
  • To determine if adjusted discrimination levels improve prediction of poor prognosis.

Main Methods:

  • Serum levels of prostatic acid phosphatase, neopterin, osteocalcin, tissue polypeptide antigen, and CA-50 were measured in 83 prostate cancer patients.
  • Marker levels were correlated with patient survival after two years.

Main Results:

  • Standard cut-off values demonstrated high sensitivity but low specificity for predicting poor prognosis.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Higher discrimination limits showed a better correlation with prognosis.
  • The degree of marker elevation, rather than mere presence, was more indicative of a poor prognosis.
  • Conclusions:

    • Adjusting discrimination levels for serum tumor markers can enhance specificity with minimal loss of sensitivity.
    • The magnitude of marker elevation is a significant factor in identifying prostate cancer patients with poor prognosis.
