Summary

This study investigated the link between ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and multiple sclerosis (MS). While a potential association exists, findings suggest AS does not commonly present with a subclinical MS-like syndrome.

Background:

  • The Human Leukocyte Antigen B27 (HLA-B27) gene is strongly associated with ankylosing spondylitis (AS).
  • Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease affecting the central nervous system.
  • The potential co-occurrence and shared genetic factors between AS and MS warrant investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of HLA-B27 in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS).
  • To investigate the presence of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) in HLA-B27 positive MS patients.
  • To assess for subclinical MS-like neurological abnormalities in patients with AS using evoked potential studies.

  • Cross-sectional study of 420 MS patients to determine HLA-B27 prevalence.
