Background:

  • Memory deficits are common after pediatric acquired brain injury (ABI).
  • Current cognitive remediation methods for pediatric ABI are non-focused.
  • There is a need for targeted memory rehabilitation in children.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe, implement, and test the feasibility of an Intensive Memory-Focused Training Program (IM-FTP).
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of IM-FTP in improving memory function in children and adolescents with ABI.

Main Methods:

  • A feasibility trial involving 11 children and adolescents with ABI who underwent a 1-month IM-FTP.
  • IM-FTP included physio-kinesis/occupational therapy, speech therapy, and neuropsychology treatments.
  • Psychometric evaluations and functional MRI were conducted before and after treatment. A control group received standard rehabilitation.

Main Results:

  • Both IM-FTP and standard rehabilitation groups showed improved immediate and delayed recall.
  • IM-FTP demonstrated superior learning of semantically related and unrelated words.
  • Enhanced immediate recall in prose memory and functional changes in the left frontal inferior cortex were observed with IM-FTP.

Conclusions:

  • An age-independent, reproducible, multidisciplinary memory-focused rehabilitation protocol (IM-FTP) was developed.
  • IM-FTP is adaptable to individual patients while maintaining comparability.
  • The protocol is applicable within months post-injury and will be tested in a larger clinical trial.
