A new plasma oxidative stress global index (OXY-SCORE) was developed and validated for left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). This OXY-SCORE shows potential for diagnosing LVH and monitoring treatment effectiveness in patients.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Biochemistry
- Biomarkers
Background:
- Oxidative stress is implicated in various pathologies.
- A global oxidative stress indicator (OXY-SCORE) exists but lacks validation in left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH).
- LVH requires a specific, validated indicator for oxidative stress assessment.
Purpose of the Study:
- To design and calculate a plasma oxidative stress global index (OXY-SCORE) specifically for patients with LVH.
- To assess the utility of this OXY-SCORE in differentiating LVH patients from controls.
- To evaluate the OXY-SCORE's association with LVH, independent of other clinical factors.
Main Methods:
- Recruited 70 adult patients, divided into control and LVH groups based on echocardiography.
- Measured plasma biomarkers of oxidative damage and antioxidant capacity.
- Calculated the OXY-SCORE using spectrophotometry/fluorimetry.
Main Results:
- OXY-SCORE showed a highly significant difference between LVH and control groups (p < 0.001).
- The OXY-SCORE achieved 68.6% sensitivity and 68.6% specificity for LVH screening at a cut-off of -1.
- A multivariable logistic regression confirmed a significant positive association between OXY-SCORE and LVH (OR=0.55, p=0.001), independent of confounders.
Conclusions:
- The developed OXY-SCORE is a promising tool for aiding LVH diagnosis.
- OXY-SCORE may also serve as a valuable indicator for monitoring treatment response in LVH patients.
