    Area of Science:

    • Rheumatology
    • Pharmacology
    • Clinical Medicine

    Background:

    • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease causing joint inflammation.
    • Effective pain management and symptom reduction are crucial for RA patients.
    • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are commonly used for RA treatment.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the efficacy of mefenamic acid with indomethacin and placebo in treating rheumatoid arthritis.
    • To evaluate subjective and objective parameters of RA symptom severity.

    Main Methods:

    • A double-blind, crossover study design was employed.
    • 18 patients with classical rheumatoid arthritis participated.
    • Treatments included mefenamic acid (500 mg t.d.s.), indomethacin (25 mg q.d.s.), and placebo, each administered for one week.

    Main Results:

    • Both mefenamic acid and indomethacin demonstrated significant improvement over placebo across most assessed parameters.
    • Indomethacin showed a trend towards better outcomes in reducing morning stiffness duration and patient preference.
    • No clinically significant differences were observed between mefenamic acid and indomethacin.

    Conclusions:

    • Mefenamic acid and indomethacin are effective treatments for rheumatoid arthritis.
    • While indomethacin may offer slight advantages in specific symptoms, both drugs provide comparable clinical benefits.
    • Further research could explore long-term efficacy and side-effect profiles.
