Plasma exchange (PLEX) may offer benefits for certain types of peripheral neuropathy in patients with Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). However, more research is needed due to the small study size and varied patient outcomes.

Background:

Observation:

  • Plasma exchange was administered to three patients diagnosed with AIDS and polyradiculoneuritis.
  • One patient experienced a cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection as the cause of their neurologic lesion.
  • Two patients had peripheral neurologic disorders potentially linked to the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) itself.

Findings:

  • In the case of CMV-induced neuropathy, plasma exchange appeared to supplement antiviral therapy during the initial polyradiculoneuritis attack.
