Mechanistic Models: Compartment Models in Algorithms for Numerical Problem Solving

213
Mechanistic models play a crucial role in algorithms for numerical problem-solving, particularly in nonlinear mixed effects modeling (NMEM). These models aim to minimize specific objective functions by evaluating various parameter estimates, leading to the development of systematic algorithms. In some cases, linearization techniques approximate the model using linear equations.
In individual population analyses, different algorithms are employed, such as Cauchy's method, which uses a...

Decision Making: P-value Method

6.6K
The process of hypothesis testing based on the P-value method includes calculating the P- value using the sample data and interpreting it.
First, a specific claim about the population parameter is proposed. The claim is based on the research question and is stated in a simple form. Further, an opposing statement to the claim  is also stated. These statements can act as null and alternative hypotheses:  a null hypothesis would be a neutral statement while the alternative hypothesis can...

Fast Decoupled and DC Powerflow

644
The fast decoupled power flow method addresses contingencies in power system operations, such as generator outages or transmission line failures. This method provides quick power flow solutions, essential for real-time system adjustments. Fast decoupled power flow algorithms simplify the Jacobian matrix by neglecting certain elements, leading to two sets of decoupled equations:

Routh-Hurwitz Criterion II01:19

Routh-Hurwitz Criterion II

756
In the application of the Routh-Hurwitz criterion, two specific scenarios can arise that complicate stability analysis.
The first scenario occurs when a singular zero appears in the first column of the Routh table. This situation creates a division by zero issues. To resolve this, a small positive or negative number, denoted as epsilon (∈), is substituted for the zero. The stability analysis proceeds by assuming a sign for ∈. If ∈ is positive, any sign change in the first...

Sampling Plans01:23

Sampling Plans

784
Sampling is a crucial step in analytical chemistry, allowing researchers to collect representative data from a large population. Common sampling methods include random, judgmental, systematic, stratified, and cluster sampling.
Random sampling is a method where each member of the population has an equal chance of being selected for the sample. It involves selecting individuals randomly, often using random number generators or lottery-type methods. For example, when analyzing the properties of a...

Summary

The new graphical processing unit (GPU)-enabled volumetric-modulated arc therapy (VMAT) tool significantly reduces calculation time with negligible dosimetric impact. This GPU-VMAT approach offers substantial time savings compared to central processing unit (CPU)-VMAT, ensuring safe and efficient treatment planning.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Physics
  • Radiation Oncology
  • Computational Imaging

Background:

  • Volumetric-modulated arc therapy (VMAT) is an advanced radiotherapy technique.
  • Multi-criteria optimisation (MCO) enhances treatment plan quality.
  • Previous VMAT MCO relied on central processing unit (CPU) calculations, which can be time-consuming.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the dosimetric accuracy and calculation time of a new Varian graphical processing unit (GPU)-enabled VMAT MCO tool.
  • To compare the performance of GPU-VMAT against CPU-VMAT and Hybrid-VMAT (H-VMAT).

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 50 patients with diverse anatomical sites was studied.
  • Treatment plans were generated using clinical standard (Base), CPU-VMAT, GPU-VMAT, and H-VMAT.
  • Dosimetric accuracy (organ at risk and target coverage) and plan calculation time were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • Negligible dosimetric differences were observed between CPU-VMAT, GPU-VMAT, and H-VMAT across the patient cohort.
  • GPU-VMAT demonstrated a mean calculation time reduction of 60.2% ± 15.6% compared to CPU-VMAT.
  • Most organs at risk showed indistinguishable dosimetric outcomes between the methods.

Conclusions:

  • The GPU-VMAT technique is safely implemented with minimal dosimetric deviations from CPU-VMAT.
  • Significant reductions in optimisation and calculation times were achieved with GPU-VMAT.
  • GPU-enabled VMAT offers a promising advancement for efficient and accurate radiotherapy planning.
